1310 Series Weld Yoke - Strange Engineering

N NO LONGER NEED FOR MY BUILD T THIS ISN’T WHAT I ORDERED.

Got a driveshaft off ebay to cut down for my 69 finally and I just had a welding question. I cut the shaft about 2 inches from the yoke so I could cut the extra off and just weld the yoke back onto the tube once it's cut down the the right size. Someone has allready shortened it and after I started grinding on it some I'm thinking they used nickle rods to weld to the cast iron in the yoke?

My question is, is the yoke cast iron and will my mig welder make a good weld to the steel tube and yoke? or am I better off leaving the 2-3 inches on the yoke and getting a piece of 1 inch rod and welding the 2 pieces of shaft back together the right size that I need???

I have had really good luck with mig or tig at the yoke to the shaft. I use a cut off wheel and grind the joint between the 2 and knock it off ,its a press fit from the yoke to shaft and its pretty tight to get on and in-line with the other yoke. all my work has been at the yoke not in the middle of the shaft ,,,,but it might still be fine .

On the DANA web page http://www2.dana.com/expert/wc.dll?DSD~dedsec~2~6~ you can see a clear view of a driveshaft yoke and what cj5/442 is saying. There is a step in the yoke that slides into the driveshaft to aid in allinement before welding. The yoke is not cast iron and therefore can be welded with your mig welder. Also, be sure to correctly clock the yokes at each ends of the driveshaft or you can have a bad vibration problem.

If you have access to a lathe, you can cut the yoke out in the lathe. That's how I did it along with a BFH, or just use a cut off wheel. You can use a MIG or TIG for the final weld.
Before you weld, use alignment marks on the yolk and the driveshaft. Like Steve said, it's a press fit so final alignment can be a pain.
