IP67 Ingress Protection Touchscreen & LCD Monitor Solutions
What are IP67 Enclosure Characteristics:
- Complete protection from dust, oil, and other non-corrosive material
- Complete protection from contact with enclosed equipment
- Protection from water, up to water projected by a nozzle against enclosure from any direction.
- Able to protect against powerful water jets
- Water projected in powerful jets (12.5 mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
- Test duration: 30 minutes; Water volume: 100 litres per minute; Pressure: 100 kPa at distance of 3 m
- Able to protect against Immersion up to 1 m
- Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion). Immersion at depth of at least 1 m measured at bottom of device, and at least 15 cm measured at top of device
IP rating
The first thing you need to look for is a touchscreen's Ingress Protection Rating (or International Protection Rating), more commonly referred to as an IP rating. Rating codes do not include hyphens or spaces, and consist of the letters IP followed by one or two digits. Two common ratings for ruggedized touchscreen displays are IP67 and IP68.
IP codes are a standard set forth by the International Electrotechnical Commission. According to the organization, the codes are designed as a "system for classifying the degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment."
The first number in the rating code represents the degree of protection provided against the entry of foreign solid objects, such as fingers or dust. These protection levels range from 0 to 6.
The second number represents the degree of protection against the entry of moisture, with protection levels ranging from 0 through 8. An IP code with an "X" in place of the first or second number means that a device hasn't been tested to protect against the entry of solid objects (the
first number) or moisture (the second number).
For example, a touchscreen display LCD monitor with the rating IPX7 is protected from accidental
submersion in 1 meter (3.3 feet) of water for up to 30 minutes, but it has not been tested against the entry of dust.
IP Rated Enclosures - quick find chart
A number replaced by x indicates that the enclosure is not rated for that spec.
First Digit (intrusion protection)
- (or X - see section below): No special protection. Not rated (or no rating supplied) for protection against ingress of this type.
- Protection from a large part of the body such as a hand (but no protection from deliberate access); from solid objects greater than 50mm in diameter.
- Protection against fingers or other object not greater than 80mm in length and 12mm in diameter (accidental finger contact).
- Protection from entry by tools, wires etc, with a diameter of 2.5 mm or more.
- Protection against solid objects larger than 1mm (wires, nails, screws, larger insects and other potentially invasive small objects such as tools/small etc).
- Partial protection against dust that may harm equipment.
- Totally dust tight. Full protection against dust and other particulates, including a vacuum seal, tested against continuous airflow.
Second Digit (moisture protection)
- (or X - see section below): No protection.
- Protection against vertically falling droplets, such as condensation. ensuring that no damage or interrupted functioning of components will be incurred when an item is upright.
- Protection against water droplets deflected up to 15° from vertical
- Protected against spray up to 60° from vertical.
- Protected against water splashes from all directions. Tested for a minimum of 10 minutes with an oscillating spray (limited ingress permitted with no harmful effects).
- Protection against low-pressure jets (6.3 mm) of directed water from any angle (limited ingress permitted with no harmful effects).
- Protection against direct high pressure jets.
- Protection against full immersion for up to 30 minutes at depths between 15 cm and 1 metre (limited ingress permitted with no harmful effects).
- Protection against extended immersion under higher pressure (i.e. greater depths). Precise parameters of this test will be set and advertised by the manufacturer and may include additional factors such as temperature fluctuations and flow rates, depending on equipment type.
- (K): Protection against high-pressure, high-temperature jet sprays, wash-downs or steam-cleaning procedures - this rating is most often seen in specific road vehicle applications (standard ISO : Road Vehicles - Degrees of protection).

What is the difference between IP65, IP66, IP67, IP68 & IP69K?
The differences between commonly sold IP65, IP67, IP68 & IP69K certified displays from Xenarc Technologies are slight, but very important. Using the above chart as a guide, we can see that all of these touchscreen and LCD monitors are protected at the highest level from solids and dust. The variations come with the protection against liquids.
IP65 = Water resistant. “Protected against water jets from any angle” *Do NOT submerge IP65 touchscreens and LCD Monitors, as these are not waterproof.
IP67 = Water Proof. “Protected against the events of temporary/long term submersion (10 minutes or more)”*You can submerge IP67 displays for extended periods; our IP67 rated touchscreen and LCD monitor solutions can be submerged and come with IP67 rated power cords and connectors.
IP68 = Waterproof. “Protected against the events of permanent submersion up to 3 meters”
IP69K = This is highest rating one could achieve. This superior IP rating suggests complete protection from dust and protection from steam-jet cleaning (water temperatures of -22F (-30C) to 158F (70C)). Some regulations, including IEC , refer to the testing of IP69K as IPx9.

If you don’t anticipate a harsh environment that is extremely dusty or wet then a lower IP rating would suffice.
Applications that involve a lot of dust, debris, or potential to be in contact with any solids or liquids will require IP ratings that are higher and adequate water resistance on the touchscreens or LCD monitors.
Examples of IP Ratings and Uses
Low IP ratings are appropriate for:
- Indoor use
- Protected use inside sealed products
- Inside sealed signage
- When using aluminum extrusions
High IP ratings are appropriate for:
- Unsealed outdoor locations
- Places that have a lot of debris
- Areas with heavy foot traffic
- High splash areas
- High contact areas (people touching them)
- Wet locations
